2006 Solid Waste Contract - Update |
Hernandez: updated committee on television taping going on by Waste Management |
about recycling. Some of it is being filmed in Lombard. Jendras: I saw them out; it was |
a beautiful day. Hernandez: Waste Management worked well with the Village of |
Lombard during the flood/handing out of stickers. Bartt: do we know the increase in |
recycling since we handed out the blue bins? Hernandez: I think we need to see at |
least a full year to get a better idea. The good news is that I haven't gotten any |
complaints! |
Educational Recycling Grants |
Recommendation of the Environmental Concerns Committee to approve four |
Educational Grants and deny one Educational Grant as follows: Delphi Academy |
(denied), Montini Catholic High School ($2,395.60), Willowbrook High School |
($2,240.80), Park View School ($1,375.00), St. Pius X School ($1,500.00) totalling |
$6,511.40. |
Park View School |
Anderson: each bike rack holds 50 bikes. Lyons: my question was how many children |
actually ride their bikes to school. That was the answer I was specifically looking for. |
Bartt: that would be hard for them to answer. Also, these bike racks would be utilized |
all summer at the park. Jendras: we have given them benches before. Lyons: where |
are all of those benches? I do not recall seeing them. Jendras: I do not recall seeing |
them last time I was there. Adams: I say a total of three items. One bench and two |
bike racks, or three bike racks. |
Consensus of committee was to award them one bench and two bike racks. |
Approve the grant request in the amount of $1,375.00 for the purchase of (1) bench and |
(2) bicycle racks. |
It was moved by Adams, seconded by Schukat, that this matter be recommended |
to the Board of Trustees for approval. The motion carried by a voice vote |
St. Pius X School |
Hernandez: to clarify the situation, the woman that gave them the quote was new and |
did not give out the correct information. They are actually lowering the costs if they go |
with what we are now recommending (6 yarder going one time per week) . Hildebrand: |
parish leaders met and we are just guessing at the amounts we have at this time. We |
are anticipating the recycling growing. Hernandez: we can get you a matrix showing: |
garbage and recycling/different amounts/how many times per week. Jendras: where is |
their paper recycling going now? Hernandez: they have 4 toters now. It is not |
adequate. Lyons: they need to make sure that everything is very condensed and |
smashed down. Do you have a can press? Hildebrand: no. Bartt: is this a new area; |
are you looking for a grant to pay for recycling? Anderson: this is not a precedent that |
we want to set. Lyons: yes, we do not want to do that. Jendras: we could grant a |
request for a can crusher. Bartt: I get the feeling that you are waiting for a decision |
from us before you start this program. Hildebrand: some of it we have to start, part of it |
we will not know how to handle until it happens. Hernandez: they should see a cost |
reduction once this starts up. Jendras: can the committee award a grant for start up |
costs of a flat sum of $1000.00? Hildebrand: this is really a "pilot program". Lyons: |
Sacred Heart has been recycling for several years. Hildebrand: this is for the lunch |
program, and we will bring it to other parochial schools in Lombard. Anderson: if we do |
it as a start up for a pilot program, we should require data back from them so that we |
can use it to present to businesses, etc. Discussion ensued. Hildebrand: one of our |
major items is plastic (plastic bottles). Adams: do you use polystyrene trays? |
Hildebrand: yes. Anderson: when Matt puts the matrix together, we can create spread |
sheet with costs of trash versus recycling. Lyons: is this amount for startup including |
containers? Jendras: they could use it for whatever they would like to. They will not |
receive money until they turn in the receipts. Lyons: in our building it did balance out |
with no real additional cost once we starting recycling. |
Approve the grant request in the amount $1500.00 towards startup capital costs for |
recycling program; reports of volume reduction of trash and volume increase from |
recycling to be submitted back to committee. |
It was moved by Jendras, seconded by Bartt, that this matter be recommended |
to the Board of Trustees for approval. The motion carried by a voice vote |
2007 Recycling Extravaganza |
Gron: need to choose a date for 2007 event. Discussion ensued. Committee decided |
that 9/15 is first choice, 9/22 is second choice. (depends on homecoming dates at |
Glenbard East and Willowbrook) Bartt will e-mail Lindstrom with information after she |
contacts schools. Lyons: did we send a thank-you note to Steve Spoden for all of his |
publicity? Anderson: no. Lyons: did we get a grant from the county? Anderson: yes. |
Lyons: did we send a thank-you to note to Pat Lose? Would you like me to do it? |
Anderson: that would be up to the committee. Committee agreed that is the right thing |
to do. Adams: do not have all of our information yet. |
Anderson: I am getting a proposal from an Electronics Recycler; they do not take TV's. |
They would run this 4 times a year/no volunteers needed. Adams: are they local? |
Anderson: I think they are located in Carol Stream. Will see what they actually take |
when I receive the proposal. Will bring it to the committee. Hernandez: another thing |
we need to address is the wood. Need to be sure we are only accepting untreated |
wood. Gron: what is going to happen with the treated wood? Hernandez: treated stuff |
is going to have to go as garbage. Anderson: we will end up sorting, etc. Bartt: it is the |
"Recycling Extravaganza", we do not want to take garbage. Gron: any research on this |
stuff going in to the landfills? Hernandez: they take it in, but won't guarantee that it will |
be recycled. |
DuPage River Salt Creek Workgroup |
Anderson: explained the organization and their objectives to the committee members |
present. Gron: how long has research been going on? Anderson: since the summer. |
Adams: seems like there are a lot of creeks that run through golf courses. Bartt: is that |
the DuPage that goes through Western Acres? Anderson: yes, the west branch. |
Schukat: there is a website that is called www.freecycle.org. If you have anything to |
give away free or would like to get something. They have 695 members in Lombard. |
Jendras:: also try www.craigslist.com to get rid of thing. You can sell, buy, and even |
get free things. |
It was moved by Bartt, seconded by Schukat, to adjourn at 8:39 PM. The motion |
