Hildebrand: progress report from St. Pius School. School has gone from 5 totes to 12

cubic yards (about 24 toters) of recycling. Waste down from 18 yards to 8 yards.

Regarding the prescription and meds collection - spoke with Dave Walters from the

IEPA. There is discretionary enforcement at this time.

Lyons: attended a seminar with some Montini students a few weeks ago. Can send

meds over to countries in need as long as there is a direct connection to a Missionary.

Morris: congratulated the Committee and the Village as a whole for signing on to the

Clean Air Counts program.

Lyons: I didn't have a lot of time to investigate this, but haven't we seen a lot of less

costly benches in the past? Jendras: I think they are looking at the beauty of this also.

Bartt: I still have an issue with the fact that they should even be receiving a grant.

Jendras: is this really educational? Bartt: we seem to be giving out grants for a lot of

benches, tables, etc. which really aren't educational. They are made of recycling

materials, so it does keep the cycle going. Jendras: I would like to see benches and

tables crossed off of the application entirely. I think we really need to look at developing

more environmental involvement in regards to these grants. Gron: the Library is a

"teaching institution". Bartt: maybe we could give them money to purchase something

else that is environmentally related such as Environmental books, software, etc. Mason:

I think that this could really be opening up a Pandora's Box.

Motion to grant request in the amount of $2114.50 with stipulation that statements made

in the letter dated May 4th to the Village be carried out.

Solid Waste Contract - Update

Matt Hernandez: passed out update sheets to Committee members present. In regards

to recycling, the Village of Lombard is at 43% - State norm is around 20%. Committee

would like to do a press release at the end of the year with the percentages of recycling

and refuse collection numbers and comparisons from last year.

Gron: would like to see an "express drop off" on Stewart, in the grassy area, for people

with just a few items (over by lumber). Needs to be addressed on the map and on the

notice. Bartt: have a few questions about gas can exchange. What are we taking

metal or plastic? Gorman: both. Almost everything out there is non-compliant.

Jendras: would like to see a picture out on the website of what a compliant gas can

looks like. (also a picture in the paper and the press release) Gorman: this program is

being paid for entirely by the Clean Air Counts group. They will have a consultant on

site for the whole day. Bartt: I think it will be a lot harder to deal with the limitations with

lumber. Hernandez: we will not be accepting painted lumber either this year. Not sure

what it is painted with. The lumber collected is made into mulch. Do not want lead base

paints going back into our environment. Could designate boxes for painted lumber and

tree waste. Jendras: we need to address the issue of treated/painted wood on the flyer.

Mason: regarding the lumber area - I would like more of the Public Works guys and the

men helping in this area instead of the women. Gron: we all need to use our own

discretion with what we attempt to pick up and move.

Gron: could we put the "express drop-off" south of the drive on Stewart, by the water

plant? This would be for "express items only" - limit the number and weight.

Committee instructed staff to bring updated map of locations, signage and color flyer to

the next meeting.

Rain Gardens and Rain Barrels

Gorman: when a resident calls and inquires about rain barrels, staff will tell them to go

out and purchase one. Then they will need to submit a receipt and photo that verifies

the installation. Jendras: what if we exceed budgeted amount? Gorman: then we

would just tell them to hold off until the next year.

Chicago and Metropolitan Mayors Caucus Environmental Protection Programs

Gron: discussed letter received from Mr. Murawski with the committee members.

Gorman: spoke with Mr. Murawski, and I will be attending committee meetings with him.

Gron: attached are slides that will be shown on Channel 6.

Ratification of Agreement

Educational Recycling Grant Applications

Request from Manor Hill School in the amount of $1,212.00 and from Montini Catholic

High School in the amount of $2,500.00 totaling $3,712.00.

Gron: going over to Manor Hill school today to give a little bit of press to their program.

Gron: I have been receiving information from Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn's office. Will distribute

to committee members.

Lyons: why do parks (Lilacia Parks) not have recycling bins? Did the parks get grants

for recycling containers? I know that these exist. Bartt: I have talked to the Park

District Administration and we are working on the Golf Course right now. Gron: there is

going to be a new Director at the Park District as of June 1st. We can follow up on this,

but it is their responsibility. Gorman: I will contact him. Lyons: ECC committee gets

absolutely no publicity except for the Recycling Extravaganza. We should have

something in the paper (maybe a column of some sort) and/or articles in the Pride.

Lyons gave information to Dave Gorman in a folder and he will make sure that it gets out

to the public in the Pride and/or on the website. Gron: the Cancer Relay Walk is being

held on June 22nd - everyone should try to be there.
