B. Illinois Prairie Path Crossing Signage (Continued from May 6th)

Recommendation from the Transportation & Safety Committee to install signage and

pavement markings at the Illinois Prairie Path Crossings at Westmore-Meyers and Main

Street (to include a raised median at Main Street). (DISTRICTS #1 & #5)

Johnson: explained and reviewed this request with the committee members. Possible

placement of a median at Main St. and Prairie Path. Place sign on median. Want to

make these crossings safer. Gron: will this cause the movement of any sidewalks?

Johnson: no. Kuehl: are the signs going to go in the middle of the street driven in to

the pavement? Johnson: no. Is on a special kind of material that if someone did hit it, it

would not do serious damage to the vehicle. Lepins: can be removed for plowing, etc.

Are you picking these up daily? Johnson: would probably put them up in the Spring and

take them down in the Fall. Lepins: will this give people using the path a false sense of

security, allowing them to think that they can just run across Main St. or Westmore?

Johnson: there is always that possibility. Would be a reminder to drivers that they need

to yield for people in the crosswalk. Schwartz: if it made the manual I am sure that it

has been checked out. I would like to see what kind of mounting devices are used.

Also, how the median would be striped. Gibbons: in reference to the accidents on

Westmore, were they motorist or pedestrian fault? Johnson: never pedestrian fault.

Gibbons: concerned with false sense of security and also with them only being up from

Spring to Fall. Murphy: if you are driving a car you need to know the rules of the road,

and they say that you need to yield to pedestrians. Will only make the person driving

the car more aware (a heads up). Lepins: if someone slows down to 20 mph and

someone runs out in front of you, it is your fault? Kundrot: different types of burden. I

believe this is only supposed to be a reminder to the driver. All this is doing is

reinforcing something that the driver is supposed to be doing anyway. Schwartz: there

is no 100% safety anywhere. My concern is that there is no median at Westmore &

Prairie Path. Johnson: the sign would be put right over the yellow lines. They are only

about 18 inches wide. Schwartz: would like to see what staff physically plans to do at

next meeting.

It was moved by Schwarz, seconded by Murphy, that this matter be tabled. The

motion carried by the following vote:

Recommendation from the Transportation & Safety Committee to install traffic signals at

the intersection of Eastgate and Highland. (DISTRICT #3)

Johnson: discussed Hulseberg's memo with the committee members. Could be set up

as a special service area. Reviewed operation of the traffic signals at the location.

Soderstrom: has a full packet from Dave Hulseberg including signatures from the

residents in the area on a petition. They want the traffic signal. Murphy: are we

anticipating that much traffic in this area? Soderstrom: no, that is why the study

showed that the signal was not warranted. Johnson: just requesting the hiring of an

engineering firm to study this area and see if the signal is in fact warranted and who

would benefit. Kuehl: who would pay for the study? Johnson: I believe it would be

paid for by DuPage Medical (according to Dave Hulseberg). Will expand on the original

survey that was done.

It was moved by Schwarz, seconded by Murphy, that this matter be recommend

to the Board of Trustees for Approval to proceed with staff recommendation to

have a traffic study performed with cost to be paid by DuPage Medical. The

motion carried by the following vote:
