Solid Waste Contract - Update |
Jim Karls from Waste Mangement in attendance. Karls passed information out to the |
committee regarding refuse, recycling and yard waste. Gorman: reviewed ICMA |
Performance Management item. Gorman: possibly look at Elgin and Oak Park to see |
how their contracts are set up and what if anything they do differently than we do to |
make themselves more successful. Out of the top ten, Illinois has 4 locations. Karls |
explained the different types of plastics recycled to the committee and also passed out |
a handout. Hildebrand: what do we do with the plastic caps from bottles? Karls will |
contact St. Pius with the information. |
Gorman: not much of an update on this. Paul Kuehlenz is not in attendance this |
evening, and this will be something that he will be coordinating with Lonnie Morris. The |
signs that were put up at schools, train station, etc. have gotten a lot of hype. We have |
gotten a lot of inquiries from other towns about these. |

2008 Recycling Extravaganza |
9/20 first choice (will contact schools to check about Homecoming) , 9/13 if conflict. |
Bartt : will contact Glenbard East and Montini and let Patty know dates of |
Homecomings. |
Lyons: Jade Lee will set up a date to come and talk with us about the electronics |
recycling . Adams: got a call from United about this at work. Will give information to |
Dave Gorman. We will need to get a per unit cost on the TV's. Gorman: I can set up a |
tour at the VintageTech plant in Plainfield on a Saturday. Need to set this up ASAP and |
decide what we are going to do. |
like to pursue in any way? This really isn't something that we could do on a municipal |
level; would need to be on a bigger scale. Discussion ensued regarding biodegradable |
bags, prices, options, etc. Bartt: could we approach stores to encourage them to use |
paper? Gron: I just don't know. I am wondering if it wouldn't be prudent to incorporate |
together with DuPage County and their recycling committee. I feel it would need to be |
something that is done County wide. Lyons: I could contact the Sierra Club. Gorman: |
suggested that we track this issue, and see what happens. Gron: I will contact |
someone at the County level to inquire about available options. |
Endorsement of the Compact put forth by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus. |
Gron: given to me by President Mueller. Jendras: just want to comment that baseline |
goals are very difficult to achieve. |
It was moved by Lyons, seconded by Mason, that this matter be recommend to |
the Board of Trustees for Approval. The motion carried by a voice vote |

Discussion ensued regarding Fluorescent Light Bulbs. |
Lyons: we could get a table or a booth at Taste of Lombard with information and |
literature regarding the Recycling Extravaganza and also to promote our programs and |
events. (Put this into the Recycling Extravaganza agenda item for next meeting.) |
Lyons: asked Hildebrand if he talked with Craig at Lombard Pharmacy about the |
thermometers? Hildebrand: yes, I did, and they are not taking the thermometers. |
Lyons: first collection of meds at Sacred Heart in December was very successful. |
